Cenote Trail Bike Tour - 2 Cenotes & Jungle Lunch
Discover the variety of cenotes, underground rivers & open sinkholes that fill the Mayan forest around Tulum. Considered by the ancients as portals into the underworld, the cenotes are one of the major attractions of the region. This mountain bike tour takes you to 2 of the most enigmatic cenotes of the area: Escondido and Cenote Cristal. Filled with history and mystery, these fascinating spaces are home to the ancient remains of humans and animals going back to the Ice Age, as well as amazing rock formations, sections of underground rivers and the clearest water you are likely to swim in, ever!
Led by expert guides, this is a great means to have an active adventure around Tulum, stopping to swim, snorkel, cliff jump, free dive and have a whole lot of fun while riding quality mountain bikes through the jungle. You will also learn a lot about the local environment and how the cenotes formed, as well as their importance throughout the millennia to ancient hunter-gatherers as well as the Maya of the Yucatan peninsula.
Starting from downtown Tulum, we ride our bikes from the centre of town, through the hip new suburbs and eventually into the surrounding jungle. This is a great ride that allows you get a feel for the original village as well as the up-and-coming modern areas that are full of interesting architecture and trendy cafes, all the while picking up local tips from your guide. Once on the outskirts of town, the road turns to jungle trails, perfect for our mountain bikes. Here you leave the bustle of town behind and we can enjoy cycling in nature, with no traffic, the view of the trees and the possibility to spot some wildlife if we get lucky.
The trail brings us out to Cenote Cristal, an open cenote surrounded by lush vegetation, where there is a perfectly placed platform for jumps & you can usually spot divers entering the cave system into the flooded Underworld. Long loved by locals for its proximity to town, Cristal is now well-known to travellers too. Luckily, we visit earlier than most so you get to enjoy this beautiful location before it gets busy. From here it is a short trip to Escondido, a quiet cenote that is great for snorkelling, full of fish and underwater vegetation, plus a couple of cliff jumps & hidden caves for the more adventurous. Escondido, meaning ‘the hidden cenote’ is one of our absolute favourites, as it is surrounded by high jungle and dense forest, which contrasts with the clear blue water and gives it a very special vibe.
After the buzz of cycling & swimming, we hit lunch at a secret spot in the jungle, with amazing views from the treetops and even a mini cenote where you can chill with cold beer after eating. With delicious food served at a great location & some welcome down time to relax, this property is also 100% eco-friendly and runs everything in a sustainable manner. Not just somewhere we stop to eat, after seeing this place we can guarantee you will want to come and stay here for a few nights!
